Secondary Audience Research (Audience Profiling)

Read through the Powerpoint and consider which types of audience classification are useful to you.

It is important that you have total grasp on your demographic audience. You now need to create an audience profile just like the one above, but for your film. Make sure you include the demographic information as the example does. you might find https://yougov.co.uk/profileslite#/ helpful for this

Tracking down details of the audience of a film.

1. Pearl and Dean sell advertising slots in many UK cinemas. In order to help potential advertisers know who might be in the audience for a new film, their business website gives audience profiles for previous films that are similar to the new releases. Go to http://business.pearlanddean.com/films_guide

2. Click the 'Films' Tab and look through the current and future releases for a film similar to your chosen genre. Notice how their colour-coding gives a quick guide to who the main target audience is.

Click on a likely new film title (or use the Advanced Search facility, select Include Past Releases, and search for a past film), then Grab the Comparable Profile, or the whole of the Film Details. The Profile breaks the likely audience down by key demographics - age, gender, "class" (= socio-economic status). This is one way to define your own target audience.

In your post:

1. Note the title of the film you have researched, then enter their reader profile in an appropriate format (text, image). You can do a screen shot of the Comparable Profile. Please take a note of the website you have accessed your research.

Don't just place in the image, underneath the profile, you will need to write a brief discussion of your findings. DiscussAge, gender, class, interests etc.

2. Once you have found the Reader Profile for your chosen film, do the same again for other films.

You will need to analyse and discuss the content of the Reader Profiles, and the Target Audience of these films.

3. After you have discussed the Reader Profiles, write a sub heading 'How will this research affect my ideas?'

Write a short paragraph discussing how this research will help you. for example, will it help you decide upon imagery ideas, actors, locations, font ideas, content of the film etc. How exactly will it help you produce Opening Credits that resembles professional practice?

4. And Finally:
You need to now discuss your target audience? How would you describe them? What would be the best way to present your audience profile (bullet points, collage of comparable film posters or stills or title screens)?
Create an audience profile of who your target audience is and insert it in the same post with a sub heading of 'My Target Audience'
Underneath your Reader Profile you need to comment on why you are targeting this group.
