When are film trailers released?
POSITIONING
/ THE TIMING OF RELEASE
Most trailers are produced at the same time as the film is being edited. The timing of a trailer campaign is important: it must be shown far enough in advance to generate excitement about the film’s release, but not so early that people forget about the film before it even comes out.
•In the USA, the first weekend can now
account for as much as 60-70% of a movie’s takings.
•According to studio bosses such as Warner
Brothers distribution chief Dan Fellman,
‘People have got to see the movie the first weekend they can. After that, the
frenzy is over.'
•A week is about how long it takes for the
hype-wave to crest and disperse, for the bad word of mouth to spread and for
the takings to plummet accordingly.
